Rehabilitation of children from Ukraine and Belarus in Slovenia

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia has been in cooperation with the Slovenian Red Cross, since 2005 implementing rehabilitation project to Ukrainian children who are suffering the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear explosion and who are still experiencing health problems. The target group includes mainly children suffering from respiratory or dermatological diseases and musculoskeletal injuries.
This year Slovenia welcomed 31 children who were included into the rehabilitation programme of health care, chest physical therapy, hydrotherapy and endurance training. This was the first time that the implementation of the program included the rehabilitation of Belarus children as well. Some 30 children (between 6 and 14 years) from Belarus were included in the program. The rehabilitation took place at the location of Debeli Rti? from 19 to 27 August 2012. During that time the children also visited different towns across Slovenia. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia in cooperation with the Slovenian Red Cross and ITF Enhancing Human Security were involved in the implementation of the program. Donors for the project were The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia, Riko d.o.o. and Slovenian Red Cross.
On 23 August 2012 Mr Mitja Štrukelj - Director General at the Directorate for International Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Assistance at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Danijel Starman - General Secretary of Slovenian Red Cross, Mr Dorijan Marši? - Director of ITF Enhancing Human Security, H.E. Mr. Mikola Kiri?enko the Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Slovenia and Mr Oleg Anisimov, Consul of the Embassy of the Republic of Belarus in Budapest who was accompanied by Mrs. Anisimov visited Belarus and Ukrainian children at Debeli Rti?. In his greeting speech Mr Štrukelj welcomed to Slovenia the children from Ukraine and Belarus and expressed satisfaction over the fact that the project “Rehabilitation of Ukraine children in Slovenia” has been successfully running for eight years while expressing his satisfaction that the project was organized for the first time for Belarus children as well.
