ITF’s Continued Commitment to a Mine-Free Bosnia and Herzegovina
Bosnia and Herzegovina bears the legacy of its turbulent past, with landmines and unexploded ordnance posing significant threats to communities. To address these challenges, ITF has been actively engaged in various mine clearance and technical survey projects.
In 2024, significant progress has been made with successful projects in Konjic, Trebinje, Modriča, Novi Travnik, Bugojno, and Novo Goražde. The cleared land can now be safely used for agriculture, infrastructure development, and other community activities, contributing to the overall economic and social recovery of the region.
Building on this progress, ITF is currently working on projects in the municipalities of Doboj, Mostar, Vareš, and Rogatica. In addition, preparations are underway for upcoming mine clearance activities in Doboj, Bihać, Bosanska Krupa, and Bratunac.
Furthermore, the Velika Kladuša 2 land release project was launched this year in the municipality of Velika Kladuša. In partnership with the Mine Detection Dog Center (MDDC) and with funding from the U.S. Department of State, this project aims to clear 1,232,744 square meters of contaminated land. Once completed, Velika Kladuša will be one step closer to being mine-free, allowing residents to rebuild their lives and communities on safe ground.
These initiatives would not be possible without the support of donors and partners. The U.S. Department of State, through the U.S. Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, has been a steadfast supporter of mine action in the region. Their contributions, alongside efforts from the Bosnia and Herzegovina Mine Action Centre (BHMAC), MDDC, and other local partners, are crucial in advancing towards a mine-free Bosnia and Herzegovina.
ITF’s work in Bosnia and Herzegovina demonstrates the power of international partnerhips in addressing complex humanitarian challenges. Each cleared square meter of land brings us closer to a safer future for the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as we continue our mission to ensure that every resident can walk the earth in safety.
