ITF/NPA project inauguration in Sjenica, Serbia

Serbia has had a great cluster munitions problem that goes back to 1999 armed conflict and has affected almost the entire territory in central and southern part of the country. The latest results obtained through the general survey (and resurvey) indicate that around 6 sq. kilometers of land are affected by cluster bombs.
On 24 July 2015 a formal inauguration of the ITF/NPA (Norwegian People's Aid) project took place in Sjenica, Serbia. NPA, with the funding provided by U.S. Department of State’s Office for Weapons Removal and Abatement through ITF, will be implementing technical survey activities to tackle the remaining cluster munitions contamination in Serbia, an issue that has posed a serious challenge in recent years.
Upon the request from SMAC, the NPA is implementing project activities to better define contaminated areas with cluster munitions remnants in order to prepare areas for clearance and to assist the SMAC in preparing project tasks that will be nominated to ITF tender for clearance. According to NPA’s assessment, a total of 1,329,837 sq. meters will be treated through six technical survey tasks. The project shall last until the end of August 2015.
