In the week from 11 till 14 September 2012, the 3rd Meeting of State Parties to the Convention on Cluster Munitions is held in Oslo, Norway, where ITF Enhancing human Security has participated as an observer organization. Altogether 111 countries participated at the 3rd meeting out of which 36 have not ratified it yet. Convention banning the use, production, stockpiling and transfer of cluster munitions, the destruction of stockpiles, the clearance of affected land and the provision of assistance to victims and affected communities was adopted in 2008 and has become binding international law in 2010.
On September 13 2012, ITF has organized side event and presented its activities and results from cluster munitions clearance projects in South East Europe and Lebanon. ITF has been since year2000 implementing cluster munitions clearance and destruction projects in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo* and since year 2010 also in Lebanon. With loyal donor support, ITF has altogether managed to clear over 10,54 km2 of land.
In last two year Convention has achieved significant results by destroying over 750.000 pieces of cluster munitions in state parties, accelerating the clearance and destruction of cluster munitions in most contaminated parts of the world while for the major success is considered also achievement to ban the use in 22 countries that still had stockpiles of cluster munitions.
