ITF monitoring visit in Lebanon

In the scope of the project “Landmine/ERW clearance in South Lebanon”, ITF representatives ambassador Damjan Bergant, ITF director, and Barbara Mali, project manager, conducted a monitoring visit to Ghandourieh to observe the location and results of implementing partner DanishChurchAid (DCA). The tasked area is among high priority areas in Lebanon as it being used for agricultural activities, mainly for growing bananas. As the land is highly contaminated by UXOs from the civil war, the farmers are under constant threat of losing their lives or limb while conducting their daily work in the area. They have to take risks in order to make a living and meet their basic needs.

The purpose of the project is to provide safe economic use of land in the future

 ITF representatives also visited Lebanon Mine Action Authority (LMAC) to discuss the new Lebanon Mine Action Strategy . As ITF is committed to further supporting Lebanon on its path achieving mine/ERW impact free status, the country needs were presented to different Embassies in Lebanon. The high level meetings were conducted with support  of H.E. PhD Milan Jazbec, ambassador of Slovenia to Lebanon based in Ankara and Deputy Head of Mission, Ms. Božena Forštnarič Boroje.

The project of Landmine/ERW clearance in South Lebanon is supported by OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) and  the Government of the United States of America – “U.S. Department of State’s Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement.
