To mark International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action on 04 April, Permanent Representation of the Republic of Slovenia to the NATO opened an exhibition on the ITF Enhancing Human Security to stress the importance of this Day also for Slovenia which is fighting against the scourge of landmines.
The event was held at NATO Headquarters in Brussels and participants were addressed by the H.E. Mr. Andrej Benedejcic, NATO Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy Ms. Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic and ITF Director Mr. Dorijan Marsic.
Ambassador Benedejcic is among others also Chairman of ITF Managing Board, non-profit humanitarian organization that was established by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia in 1998 and has in continuation stressed that ITF has been continuously developing and enhancing its mission thus expanding the scope of activities and geographic area of their implementation to reflect the changing human security environment; needs of beneficiary countries and priorities of donor community. Mr. Ambassador gave special emphasis on ITF project in Libya – rehabilitation of war victims that actually started immediately after the end of NATO intervention last year. At the end, Ambassador Benedejcic expressed sincere gratitude to all ITF donors.
Mr. Maršič handed over a plaque of appreciation to Mr. Antonios Chatzikadis, General Director of NATO Maintenance and Supply Agency (NAMSA) in grateful recognition of its exceptional contribution to humanitarian mine action worldwide and helping the mine-affected countries in their strive for mine-free land.
At this occasion, ITF exhibition was opened and project »Socioeconomic reintegration of mine victims from South Caucasus« presented together with Lend your leg campaign. Participants had opportunity to see plastic models of different antipersonnel mine that were used in former Yugoslavia.
In the light of International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action participants were kindly asked to symbolically roll up their pant leg and by that express their support for all mine victims whose lives have drastically changed.
