ITF Conducting Awareness-raising and Advocacy through Field Visits

As awareness-raising and advocacy are amongst ITF's core activities, the organization carried out a field visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the beginning of September 2016 for representatives of the donor community and journalists.

The rationale of the visit was to highlight the long-lasting mine contamination issue in Bosnia and Herzegovina and its consequences for the population in affected municipalities.

Five state representatives, Ambassadors and Diplomats, as well as journalists from the Slovenian media, two commercial and one national broadcaster, attended the visit. The participants had the opportunity to get acquainted with demining methods employed in Bosnia and Herzegovina, namely mechanical demining, mine detection dogs and manual demining, as well as to reach out to the representatives of the affected local communities and mine victims.

The greater part of the demonstrations has been carried out in the Municipality of Goražde, where a large area of mine fields are just a few steps from inhabited houses. This deadly legacy of war continues to pose an immense threat to the security of the inhabitants and hinders their opportunities to generate income and provide sources of livelihood.
