ITF Beekeeping Initiative Presented to FAO
On February 13th, ITF, alongside the Agricultural Institute of Slovenia and the Beekeeping Academy of Slovenia, had the privilege of introducing its beekeeping initiative to representatives from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The project, named 'Beekeeping as empowerment tool for people with disabilities from Bosnia and Herzegovina', was the focal point of discussion, resonating with FAO's dedication to sustainable agriculture. The initiative aims to empower mine victims from Bosnia and Herzegovina to establish small beekeeping businesses. Furthermore, it sheds light on the significant potential of beekeeping in offering tangible benefits to individuals affected by landmines and unexploded ordnance.
Beekeeping presents a valuable opportunity to enhance the quality of life for vulnerable social groups and disabled individuals by offering employment opportunities and the flexibility of working from home. Particularly suitable for small-scale agricultural activities in areas with limited capital and technological resources, it requires minimal initial investment. Its simplicity, without the need for complex technologies, makes it an ideal activity to establish a stable household income.
Beyond merely providing a source of income, beekeeping also holds the promise of healing and resilience within communities that bear the scars of conflict. Through discussions, representatives from ITF and FAO delved into the nuanced ways in which this initiative can foster positive change on a global scale, particularly in regions dealing with the aftermath of conflict and mine contamination. They explored the economic and therapeutic benefits of beekeeping, underscoring shared commitments and laying the groundwork for future partnership to empower vulnerable communities worldwide.
ITF extends its gratitude to the partners and donors whose support has been indispensable in realizing this project. Thanks go to the Agricultural Institute of Slovenia, Beekeeping Academy of Slovenia, UDAS Organization, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia and the Republic of Korea for their commitment and financial assistance. It is through their efforts that we can move closer to a future where the devastating impact of landmines is mitigated, and communities thrive sustainably.
