Croatia 20 years after. Mine victims - where are they, what do they do, what do they need?
The project that pursued three specific objectives was successfully implemented by NGO Association for promotion of equal opportunities – APEO and supported by the donation of United States of America.
Twenty years after the beginning, and 15 years after the end of the military conflict in Croatia, Croatia still faces a lot of war consequences. One of them is still high pollution of the Croatian territory with land mines and UXO. Mine victims are highly invisible in Croatian society and it is hard to estimate to what extent they are satisfied with current scope of rights and care provided by the state.
The project “CROATIA TWENTY YEARS AFTER - mine victims: Where are they, what do they do, what do they need”, successfully implemented by NGO Association for promotion of equal opportunities – APEO and supported by the donation of United States of America (Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement in U.S.Department of State’s Bureau of Political-Military Affairs) through ITF pursued three specific objectives: a) to asses the needs of mine victims in Croatia, b) to improve the social status of mine victims in Croatia by improving the implementation of legislation related to mine victims in Croatia and c) to make awareness on mine victims needs and socio-economic position in Croatia within general public. APEO with partners (Association of Mine Victims of Karlovac County, Centar za mirovne studije) concluded research on needs assessments of mine victims in Croatia. They developed and presented policy proposal based on research results. One of the main activities was documenting the personal stories from mine victims. For that purpose partner on the project CMS found ten personal stories which were published and presented in book on December 13, 2011.
