Continuation of ITF Activities in Libya

Given the initial assessments of landmine, explosive remnants of war (ERW) and improvised explosive devices (IED) contamination, their widespread use, and the return of the local population to their homes, there proved to be a great need for mine risk education campaigns in Libya. To that end, ITF is providing technical and capacity-building support to the Libyan Mine Action Centre (Lib MAC). Lib MAC Risk Education (RE) staff is implementing workshops and trainings with the aim of awareness rising and minimising the deadly impact of mines, ERW and IED.

In December 2016, Lib MAC RE staff implemented a risk education campaign in the Alfallah refugee camp, near Tripoli. The lectures and workshops included the explanation on different kinds of hazards present in the field, possible risks taken, defining who is an unknowing risk-taker, and methods on spreading awareness to the rest of the community.

The activities are supported by U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Political-Military Affairs (PM/WRA).
