Memorandum of Understanding between ITF and Bosnalijek d.d. Sarajevo was signed on 25 May 2011 at the premises of ITF Implementation Office Sarajevo. The donation from Bosnalijek d.d. Sarajevo in the amount of 10.000 BAM will be earmarked for the Project “Mine Risk Education through Sitting Volleyball” by OKI Fantomi Sarajevo in cooperation with Marshall Legacy Institute and Mine Detection Dog Center from Konjic, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The OKI Fantomi Sitting Volleyball Team will promote mine risk education (MRE) in the most heavily mine-affected communities of BH. The Team will compete against other Sitting Volleyball teams and play exciting exhibition games for students, survivors, and other local community members. Team members will inspire audiences with their athleticism, positive attitude, and energetic spirit, demonstrating that survivors can lead active, happy, hopeful, and productive lives. Fantomi members will visit schools and communities to deliver compelling, interactive MRE presentations and share their personal stories of crisis and comeback. They will provide students, teachers, and leaders with informative mine awareness materials to disseminate throughout their communities.
Bosnia-Herzegovina remains the most severely mine-and-ERW-affected country in Europe. There are thousands of mine survivors in BIH today, though many times that number are threatened daily by the scourge of landmines. There remains an urgent need to present MRE to the threatened populations and provide hope and inspiration to the injured.
