Ukrainian Women’s Sitting Volleyball Team Trains in Slovenia
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has displaced millions and left many in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. The war’s toll extends beyond immediate survival needs, affecting all facets of life, including sports. In response, a joined effort has emerged to support Ukrainian athletes, helping them sustain their training and mental well-being during these challenging times.
The Ukrainian women's sitting volleyball team recently completed a 10-day training camp in Braslovče, Slovenia, supported by ITF, the Paralympic Committee of the Republic of Slovenia, and the Volleyball Federation of Slovenia. This initiative, financially supported by the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, aimed to provide the athletes with a secure environment to train, away from the instability in their home country. The camp involved intensive training sessions, access to top-tier infrastructure, and joint practice sessions with the Slovenian women’s sitting volleyball team, which is preparing for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The camp concluded with a friendly match between the Ukrainian and Slovenian teams, held in Braslovče. The match was attended by Dr. Aleš Musar, spouse of the President of the Republic of Slovenia, as well as representatives from the ITF and the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs. This event highlighted the unifying power sport holds, offering a valuable sense of normalcy and solidarity amidst the ongoing crisis.
Beyond sports, the project also offered psychological support and social activities, crucial for helping these athletes cope with the trauma of war. This holistic approach not only ensured the continuity of their athletic pursuits but also contributed to their emotional recovery, empowering them to face future competitions with renewed strength.
This initiative demonstrates the positive effects of international support and cooperation, addressing both physical and emotional needs and reinforcing the role of sports in providing hope and resilience in times of crises.
