Rehabilitation of mine victim from Azerbaijan in Slovenia
In March 2006 Slovenia welcomed Mr. Elman Malik Alijev from Baku Azerbaijan, a 30 year old mine victim who stepped on a landmine some 12 years ago during the war. The mine accident severely damaged both his legs and his left shoulder. First aid was administered in the field hospital and he was later transferred to Baku Hospital for enduring and arduous treatment. As the pain did not subside he asked the doctors to amputate his left limb. After the amputation he received an artificial limb which was not properly made so he could not make appropriate use of it.
Mr. Alijev is the first mine victim from Azerbaijan for whom The International Trust Fund for Demining and Mine Victim Assistance (ITF) enabled rehabilitation in Slovenia. Mr. Alijev’s rehabilitation in Slovenia lasted three weeks. During his stay at the Institute for Rehabilitation of the Republic of Slovenia a new prosthesis was made especially for him and he received a short training course on the proper use of his new artificial limb.
