ITF Enhancing Human Security (ITF) received new donation from Germany, one of the most regular supporters of the ITF, in total amount of 590.000,00 EUR. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed on 10 May 2012 at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Ljubljana, by H.E. Mr Werner Burkart, German Ambassador to Slovenia and Mr Dorijan Marši?, ITF Director.
The donation is earmarked and divided into two parts, more precize 490.000,00 EUR for demining and technical survey activities in Bosnia and Herzegovina (location Bosnia Posavina) that will be carried out by the Norwegian People's Aid (NPA), which has been active in Bosnia and Herzegovina since 1996. The second part of donation in amount of 100.000,00 EUR is earmarked for safe disposal of ammunition from »hotspots« sites in Albania, that will be implemented by NGO DanChurchAid.
Mine clearance remain one of the most necessary activities and conditions for the restoration of normalcy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is one of the most mine contaminated countries in the world and to enable socio-economic development of the country. On the other side, Albania became mine safe in 2009 but suffers from more than 100.000 tons of obsolete and surplus ammunition that is many times unproperly stored and managed, thus seriously hampering human security of near-by population.
Germany has in total contributed more than 21,2 million EUR to the ITF in 14 years and this long-standing support confirms that ITF gained the confidence and full support of its donors and has therefore become a reference institution in the field of Mine Action
