Karlovac County once again donated funds to ITF
ITF has received yet another donation from the Karlovac County in the amount of HRK 400.000 . The Memorandum of Understanding between Karlovac County and ITF was signed in Karlovac by County Prefect Mr. Ivica Horvat and ITF Director Mr. Goran Ga?nik. The representatives of the Croatian Mine Action Center in charge of project supervision in Croatia were also present during the signining ceremony.
Karlovac County remains one of the most mine contaminated counties in the Republic of Croatia. Both farmers in the countryside and civilians in towns face danger from unexploded mines on a daily basis. The latest donation, third in a row, shall be used for demining project in the area of Josipdol.
According to data provided by the Croatian Mine Action Center there are 997 sq.km of mine contaminated land in the Republic of Croatia. Mine suspected areas infested with mines and UXO can be found in 12 counties ( in 114 cities and municipalities) . Since 2005 a revision of all mine suspected areas is underway (out of all MSA 25% is designated for demining and 75% for technical survey operations). There are approximately 13.000 signs throughout Croatia cautioning general population of mine risk.
In the whole region of South East Europe the mine and UXO contamination is still very extensive. Research shows that in the region of SEE the size of mine suspected areas represents an area of approximately 2.900 km2 and that Croatia is still one of the most contaminated countries in this region.
In the past ten years of work in the region of SEE, ITF has raised more that 318 million Eur, cleared approximately 83 million sq.meters of contaminated land and provided help to more than 1.000 mine victims with more than 100.000 children and adults from the region of SEE taking part in mine awarenness programs.
