Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) hosted a Donors Briefing on Mine Action situation in Azerbaijan. The main goal was to share the achievements in mine action and plans for the future with the donor community as well as the representatives of the donor countries and international organizations, related government agencies and NGOs.
Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Abid Sharifov, UN Resident Coordinator, UNDP Resident Representative Mr. Marco Borsotti, UNDP Mine Action Team Leader Mr. Sayed Aqa and the Director of ANAMA Mr. Nazim Ismaylov co-chaired the meeting.
Mr. Dorijan Marsic, the Director of the International Trust Fund for Demining and Mine Victims Assistance (ITF), visiting Azerbaijan for the first time in an ITF director role, stated that ITF assisted and has an intention to continue good cooperation with ANAMA. "Azerbaijan joined the South-Eastern Mine Action Coordination Council (SEEMACC) in 2002 and is very active in the Council. Currently, we review the funding of courses for medical staff involved in Mine Victims support activities as well as support to demining efforts in Azerbaijan" he stated.
ITF director met with Head of OSCE mission in Azerbaijan, Mr. Maurizio Pavesi to discuss possibilities of cooperation in the field of Mine Action.
ITF representatives also used this opportunity to observe activites in the field, therefore they visited ANAMA second regional base in Khanlar and the on-going training course for local deminers. ITF representatives also observed the MRE program for schools in one of local schools and inspected demining site in village Ter-Ter where demining works are implemented by NGO International Eurasia Press Fund.
