International Trust Fund for Demining and Mine Victim Assistance (ITF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Vukovar Srijem County Demining Fund in the amount of 3 million Croatian kunas. The MoU was signed in Vukovar Srijem County headquarters by Mr. Božo Gali?, the County Prefect of Vukovar Srijem County and Mr. Goran Ga?nik, ITF director. The donation will be matched with funds provided by the US and will be used for demining works on four projects located on arable land and forest in Tordinci, Vinkovci,Vu?edol and Nuštar.
Demining Fund of Vukovar Srijem County, comprises of various commercial and legal entities and represents an organization which was established in 2007 with the purpose to collect donations for demining of mine suspected areas in the County and to shorten the time necessary for demining of one of the most contaminated counties in the Republic of Croatia. According to data provided by the Croatian Mine Action center ( CROMAC ) (Croatian National Structure for Eradication of Mine Problems) there are still 80 sq. kilometers of mine suspected arable land and forest areas in Vukovar Srijem County with plans to demine approximately 4,2 sq. kilometers in year 2008.
ITF closely cooperates with Croatian Mine Action structures since year 2000 , allocating to Croatia more than 38 million EUR and demining more than 26 million sq. meters of mine suspected areas (clearing approximately 2.5 million sq. meters of mine suspected areas in Vukovar Srijem county).
On the occasion of the signing of the MoU , Mr. Goran Ga?nik stated that: »Fundraising efforts aimed at eradication of mine problem that are being joined by the civil society represents the right choice for ITF and demonstrates that the objective of private donor awareness raising has been reached. Thus, additional social and economic development of mine contaminated areas is further motivated.«
In ten years of its existence ITF has raised more than 223 million EUR of donations , cleared approximately 83 million sq. meters of land and provided help to more than 1000 mine victims in several rehabilitation centers in the region. More than 100.000 children and adults from South East Europe participated In mine awareness programs supported by ITF.
