Children from Belarus and Ukraine Attending Rehabilitation Programs in Slovenia

Armed conflicts and other disasters affect children, vulnerable members of society the most. Sometimes, the consequences of crises affect several generations. It is therefore of outmost importance to have a sustainable approach when tackling these issues, especially when it comes to children.
With the financial support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia and in close cooperation with the Youth Health and Summer Resort of the Slovenian Red Cross at Debeli Rtič, Slovenia, and local partners in affected countries, ITF has been implementing two projects, which provide medical and psychosocial rehabilitation for children from Belarus and Ukraine respectively. Until this year, 89 Belarusian and 240 Ukrainian children have travelled to Slovenia to receive the necessary support through ITF.
In order to address the needs of children affected and traumatized by the armed conflict in Ukraine, ITF is implementing a project for enhancement of their psychosocial well-being. Additional 81 children suffering the consequences of the Ukrainian conflict are being treated at the Youth Health and Summer Resort of Red Cross Slovenia to receive the necessary psychosocial support through various activities.
Disastrous consequences do not only originate in conflicts. The radioactive particles remaining from the 1986 nuclear accident in Chernobyl are still affecting the daily lives of people. This year, additional 30 children from Belarus, suffering from medical conditions caused by radiation, have arrived to the Youth Health and Summer Resort to be included in the medical rehabilitation program. Among others, it includes respiratory physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and endurance exercises that will improve their health as well as their general well-being.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia has ensured the financial support for both projects to continue in 2018 as well.

Oboroženi konflikti in druge katastrofe najbolj vplivajo na otroke, najranljivejše člane družbe. V nekaterih primerih lahko posledice kriz nosi več generacij.
Z namenom naslavljanja potreb otrok, prizadetih in travmatiziranih v oboroženem konfliktu v Ukrajini, ITF izvaja projekt izboljšanja njihove psihosocialne dobrobiti.
